What It Means To Be A Local
Remember the times when you needed a recommendation in a new place, and it was always “ask the locals” or when you were lost in an unknown neighborhood and you asked a local how to find your way back, or when we didn’t have online shopping and you bought produce, alcohol, gifts, meat, and household items all from your local store?
So, what does it truly mean to be a local? I live in Drury, a small rural town on the outskirts of Auckland, and yes, I would call myself a local. I could tell you where the best coffee, bakery, butchery, and dairy are located. The best places to walk your dog, the best roast, an amazing beautician, about the A&P show, and so on.
To me, the meaning of being local is simply supporting local. From taking care of the land, to participating in community events, to supporting local businesses. It is choosing to make a conscious effort to support our people, our communities, our business, our future.
In the last two years we have seen huge efforts to shift the culture of shopping - a shift to encourage people like you and me to support local businesses. And rightfully so! When you support a local business you are supporting local families, you are putting money back into your community, you are embracing the creativity and talents of your neighbors, you are supporting a dream. It has always been such an important thing to me personally, but from a business perspective – the importance of giving back to our communities is precious and paramount.
Here is what you can do to support your local businesses:
